Shakopee Indians vs Austin Greyhounds @ SPAMtown Challenge

Sunday June 29, 2014 10:00AM

Rain moved into the area Saturday night and caused the postponement of two games in the Indians pool play.  In addition to that both the Hayfield team and the St. Paul team had scheduling conflicts on Sunday and couldn't play.  The Indians would face the host team Greyhounds again Sunday morning pending the rain would hold off.  The Greyhounds were 2-0 thus far in the tournament while the Indians were 1-1.  If the Indians were to make it out of pool play, not only do they have to win the game at hand, but tiebreaker rules state that the locals would ONLY need to win by 12 runs (Austin won 11-0 on Friday).

After a 90 minute delay to start the game, the field and teams were ready to go.  Perhaps catching Austin preoccupied after spending better than 2 hours cleaning water off the field, the Indians "jumped" on the board right away in the top of the 1st.  5 of the first 6 batters drew walks to lead off the game.  After the first hit of the game scored another run, the locals found themselves ahead 4-0.

Austin answered with one unearned run in the bottom half but pitcher Pat Lenton shut the door after that.  Lenton turned in a solid effort just allowing 4 hits and the one unearned run in the complete game.

The Tribe had 7 consecutive hitters reach base in the top of the 2nd.  Mark Dolenc hit a ball nearly to the SPAM museum for his 2nd home run of the season and Troy Wasiloski picked up 2 RBI.

Going into the 5th inning the Indians led 11-1 and needed one run to force a coin flip tiebreaker to advance or two runs to win the pool outright.  Zak Hoffman reached on a walk.  Brannon Weigel singles with two out to move Hoffman to 3rd.  John Hellkamp delivered with a double scoring Hoffman.  That was all the Tribe could muster.

Austin threatened in the bottom half getting a runner to 2nd base.  But that's where the game would end.

After all that excitement, Shakopee lost a tie breaking coin-flip for the right to move on to the semi-finals.  Shakopee leaves Austin with a 2-1 record and hopefully remembering how to score some runs.

Big thanks to the people in Austin for a great time.  Overall a great tournament with a million things going on for everyone to enjoy.
