State Tournament Game 3: Sun., Aug. 29, 2010
The Indians continued their title defense on Sunday facing the Burnsville Bobcats from Section 5. The venue for this game moved back to Willmar where the Indians managed just one hit in the first game of the tournament. The offense was determined to make up for that and there was no better medicine than a stiff breeze blowing out to left field. Chris Rupert started on the bump for the Indians and worked through the Burnsville batting order nearly unscathed through 3 innings. The Bobcats struck first in the 3rd inning taking a 1-0 lead. This might’ve been the wake-up call the Indians’ sticks needed. The Indians put runs on the board in every inning from the 3rd inning on except the 7th. Burnsville put up runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. But each time the Indians offense answered the call. After allowing a big inning in the Burnsville 5th, the Indians were down 8-5. But a two-out rally would change that. Curt Hartfiel and Brandon Olson set the table for Joey Heller’s third big fly of the season a line drive clearing the left center field wall to tie the game 8-8. Scott Hollingsworth, draftee from Jordan, came in relief of Rupert in the 5th and shut down the Burnsville bats the rest of the way. In the 6th, the Indians took the lead back for good. Chris Baso scored on a Brannon Weigel sac fly to make the score 9-8. In the 8th, Shakopee added two insurance runs. Weigel grounded out to second but Dan Harris, pinch running for Baso, scored on the play. Tim Piechowski added an RBI single scoring Kyle Hoover from second base to make the score 11-8. Troy Wasiloski, Baso and Hartfiel all tallied three knocks on the night to lead the offense. Sixteen hits off three different Burnsville pitchers were exactly what the doctor ordered to get the bats back on track after a slow start to the tournament. Brandon Olson scored three times while Heller drove in three runs. Shakopee moves on to play in the “unbeatens” game on Saturday at 6:00 vs. Savage. We hope to see you there!
