State Tournament Game 3: Sun., Aug. 29, 2010
Shakopee 11 - Burnsville 8

Jordan's Scott Hollingsworth

Chris Baso

Cut Hartfiel
... pitched 4 innings, 4 Ks and 4 hits, 0 runs. ... 3 hits, 1 run and 1 RBI. ... 3 hits and 2 run.

Brannon Weigel

Joey Heller

Brandon Olson
... sac fly to make the score 9-8. ... scored twice and collected 3 RBIs. ... scored three times.

The Indians continued their title defense on Sunday facing the Burnsville Bobcats from Section 5. The venue for this game moved back to Willmar where the Indians managed just one hit in the first game of the tournament. The offense was determined to make up for that and there was no better medicine than a stiff breeze blowing out to left field.

Chris Rupert started on the bump for the Indians and worked through the Burnsville batting order nearly unscathed through 3 innings. The Bobcats struck first in the 3rd inning taking a 1-0 lead. This might’ve been the wake-up call the Indians’ sticks needed. The Indians put runs on the board in every inning from the 3rd inning on except the 7th. Burnsville put up runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. But each time the Indians offense answered the call.

After allowing a big inning in the Burnsville 5th, the Indians were down 8-5. But a two-out rally would change that. Curt Hartfiel and Brandon Olson set the table for Joey Heller’s third big fly of the season – a line drive clearing the left center field wall to tie the game 8-8.

Scott Hollingsworth, draftee from Jordan, came in relief of Rupert in the 5th and shut down the Burnsville bats the rest of the way. In the 6th, the Indians took the lead back for good. Chris Baso scored on a Brannon Weigel sac fly to make the score 9-8. In the 8th, Shakopee added two insurance runs. Weigel grounded out to second but Dan Harris, pinch running for Baso, scored on the play. Tim Piechowski added an RBI single scoring Kyle Hoover from second base to make the score 11-8.

Troy Wasiloski, Baso and Hartfiel all tallied three knocks on the night to lead the offense. Sixteen hits off three different Burnsville pitchers were exactly what the doctor ordered to get the bats back on track after a slow start to the tournament. Brandon Olson scored three times while Heller drove in three runs.

Shakopee moves on to play in the “unbeatens” game on Saturday at 6:00 vs. Savage. We hope to see you there!

State Tournament Game 2: Sat., Aug. 28, 2010
Shakopee 8 - Hastings Hawks 4 (10 innings)

Dane Secott

Brannon Weigel

Tim Piechowski
... another brilliant performance. ... 12 Ks! ... drove an 0-2 pitch over the head of the Hawks centerfielder for a triple. ...drive homerun over the right field wall.

Brandon Olson

Chris Baso
... a valid triple over down the right field line. ... 2 hits and 4 RBIs.

The local nine took on the Hawks from Hastings on Saturday in their second game in the 2010 State Tournament. The game figured to be a pitcher’s dual again as Shakopee sent Dane Secott to the hill to face Hastings ace Mark Moriarty. Secott and Moriarty were both 1-0 winners in their respective games last weekend. Through the first three innings the two starters were on top of their game: Both hitters faced just 9 batters, Moriarty hadn’t allowed a hit and struck out 6 while Secott allowed one hit and struck out 5. The one hit Secott gave up was to the Hastings ninth batter in the order who got greedy trying to extend a double to a triple and was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Brandon Olson led off the Shakopee 4th with a valid triple over down the right field line. He later scored on Aaron Olson’s sac fly to center getting Shakopee on the board first.

In the 5th the Indians struck again in rather unlikely fashion. With one out, Brannon Weigel drove an 0-2 pitch over the head of the Hawks centerfielder for a triple. Tim Piechowski followed Weigel with a line drive homerun over the right field wall to bring in Weigel and give the Indians a little breathing room with a 3-0 lead.

Joey Heller led off the 6th inning with a walk and later moved to 2nd and 3rd on two wild pitches. Chris Baso later knocked a hit through the infield scoring Heller giving Secott and the Indians a 4-0 lead after six innings.

Secott continued to dominate the Hastings batters. In the 6th, he struck out the side bringing his whiff total to 11. In the 7th, Hastings would finally get to Secott scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. This would spell the end of the night for Dane after another brilliant performance.

Indians manager called on draftee Trent Bohnsack to close the door. In the 8th, Bohnsack couldn’t be touched. In the 9th, Hastings loaded the bases on a walk and two singles with just one out. On a full count pitch Bohsack couldn’t get the strike three call on a boarderline pitch which made the score 4-3 and the bases still loaded. The next hitter skied one behind second base. Brandon Olson went to the spot where the ball might fall if there were no wind and turned to the infield to make the catch. However, the gale force winds drifted the ball nearly 10 feet from where he stood. With Olson, facing the infield the base umpire called “infield fly” for the second out of the inning. Even though Olson appeared camped under the ball, the ball fell to the ground and all three Hastings runners started running. Olson flipped the ball the Aaron Olson covering 2nd base and tagged the runner out running/walking from first for the third out of the inning. The runner from third scored before the third out and the game was tied at 4-4.

In the top of the 10th, Shakopee hitters got things going against Erik Olson, a draftee from Miesville. Heller led off the inning reaching base on an error before Aaron Olson knocked the daylights out of a ball driving it straight into the teeth of the wind. What would’ve been a homerun any other day, didn’t even make it to the warning track. The left fielder however didn’t play the ball right and it dropped for a double. An intentional walk to Troy Wasiloski to load the bases, Baso delivered the big blow of the night. Baso lined a pitch to the gap in right center field and all three runners scored giving the Indians the lead right back at 7-4. One more run would score in the 10th on a wild pitch to make it 8-4.

In the bottom of the 10th, Scott Hollingsworth relieved Bohnsack and delivered a 1-2-3 inning and the Indians are moving on!

An exciting game that included everything from a pitchers dual in the beginning to crazy plays in the end. In the State Tournament, you take wins any way they come!

State Tournament Game 1: Sat., Aug. 21, 2010
Shakopee 1 - Austin Blue Sox 0

Dane Secott

Troy Wasiloski

Brannon Weigel
... threw all nine innings scattering just four hits, collecting seven strikeouts and walking none. ... scored on a nifty slide around the Austin catcher. ... delivered with the only hit of the game for the Indians scoring Wasiloski.

As the old adage goes: To win in the post-season you need good pitching and defense and some timely hitting. That's the exact recipe the Indians used on Saturday in the first round of the 2010 State Tournament. Dane Secott toed the rubber for the local nine and was magnificent. Secott threw all nine innings scattering just four hits, collecting seven strikeouts and walking none. Nels Nelson stood in the way of the Indian's run at defending their 2009 title and he equaled Secott's performance except for an unearned run given up in the 4th inning. This was a classic pitchers dual where neither offense could get much of anything going.

In the 2nd and 3rd innings Austin hitters collected one single each. But the runners went no farther than first base. In Shakopee's half of the 4th inning Troy Wasiloski reached base with one out. Nelson collected a strikeout against Wasiloski but the ball rolled to the backstop and Troy was on first. With two out, Kyle Hoover was hit by a pitch (his second of three times getting hit by a pitch) to move Wasiloski into scoring position. Brannon Weigel then delivered with the only hit of the game for the Indians scoring Wasiloski. Wasiloski scored on a nifty slide around the Austin catcher attempting the tag and the Indians were up 1-0.

Austin tried to answer in the 5th getting a lead-off single to start the inning. Two sac bunts moved the runner to third base. Secott got the last out on a fister back to the mound and the threat was over.

Austin got one more single in the 7th with one out. But Secott again worked out of the inning forcing a couple of ground outs.

Secott would allow one runner past first base in the game. The Indians defense made all the plays they needed. And the offense...while they got the one hit to score the only run of the game...will need to regroup as the competition will not be any easier.

The local nine advance to the double elimination portion of the state tournament starting on Saturday August 28th facing the Hastings Hawks scheduled for a 7:30 PM start in Bird Island. We hope to see you there!
